The missions are really repetitive, and the control system is not that great. The graphics are crisp and clear, but nothing special. Overall this game is very disappointing, especially as there is not many space trading sims on the Xbox.

Started off well, but gets boring very quickly.

Dark Star One Broken Alliance is a space combat sim that was originally released in 2006 by the developers Ascaron. From it's release it was praised for it's graphics but frowned upon for it's game play. It was also compared to games of the same genre like Freelancer and X-Series. I myself am a fan of Freelancer and Dark star One is very much like it. Some said Dark star One was Freelancer done right. So is it?. Well let's start with graphics and sound. Graphically the game is very nice. The systems look incredible in places. The space craft look really good and the characters are done very well. Sound is also good. I can't vouch for how an ion cannon should sound but I guess it was close. As for game play this is where it was said to be better than Freelancer since it addressed Freelancers main weakness, which was its very repetitive side quests. Dark Star One has addressed these issues and has done it better. Though the side quests are still the same over and over they have managed to make it feel less repetitive which is a very good thing. So is this Freelancer done right? The simple answer is 'no'. Dark Star One has sacrificed the one thing that made Freelancer and other space sims great, exploration. In this game you enter a system and there are only a few limited things you can do. Fight some pirates, visit the trade station and very little else. In other Space sims you can travel to places like nebula's and asteroid fields to find old ship wrecks that give you rare and powerful weapons. Or find a hidden base that people live on that sell rare space craft. This all makes exploration worth doing and very exciting at times. This game has cut all that out which makes the game quite tedious after a while since visiting every system becomes just like the last with very few surprises. The main storyline is done pretty well although again it resembles past games in places. All in all if this is your first space combat sim you will find a good deal of fun playing it. If however you have played these sort of games in the past you may find this a lesser game to those you have played, so may not get too much enjoyment out of it. For its graphics and sound and also its less repetitive feel at side quests I will give this game a 72.

It's ok, gets repetitive pretty quickly. Graphics are a little dated (but this is a 4 year old PC game) - still good to play something like this on a console though, nice change from the usual genres.
