This game should have been called "annoyed in the dark". Honestly, this has to be about the most annoying game I have ever had the misfortune of playing. It's control system is clunky at best and the constant switching from 1st person back to 3rd when a cut scene happens became tedious. It's meant to be an easy 1k gamer points, that is indeed true, if you haven't smashed your controller up before reaching it.
I really wanted to like this game, as i'm a big fan of this style, however this is one annoying title! the camera is poor, the controls are worse, worth a rent, if only to see how it looks, because the graphics are very good.
Very innovative and quite an entertaining game to start with. But then the annoying camera angles really start to get to you after a while. Quite a good clone from the original gets you thinking about ways to solve puzzles. Really like the way you can pick stuff up carry it to a fire to set it on alight and then use them as a torch. A good rental for the weekend but that's about as far as it goes
Outstanding and well worth the rent
Alone In The Dark is a crazy mix of survival horror, GTA style free-roaming and driving, FPS and adventure game. There are also some platform elements thrown in for good will. The story is mostly nonsense, unfortunately. You're Edward Carnby - although you don't know who you are at the very start - and you have to escort a stone somewhere in order to stop something bad happening. AitD is full of intriguing and even fantastic elements, but also mired in terrible gameplay mechaincs. The use of fire is fantastic when it comes to burning down buildings, but not so fantastic when you have to set every single monster alight to stop them coming back to life. The thrill of driving through Central Park is great, but not when you nick a twig and are sent flying in to the air. Ultimately AitD is trying to be too many things. While it excels in a few sections, it becomes irritating quickly whenever the flaws show up. It's worth a rent, and it's worth a sequel - one which decideds exactly what it wants to be.
